boxes came about for two reasons: first, my long-standing desire to try designing objects, and second, my acquaintance with Polina, the founder of a production company making items from recycled plastic. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; During the COVID period, my perception of time and the constancy of life’s flow began to change significantly, leading me to reflect on the objects that seem most essential in our life. At that time, I started studying chests, which, in many cultures, could serve both as luggage for transporting items and as stationary furniture. I developed several design options, but the project stalled there. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A few months later, I met Polina, who had just started working with recycled plastic, focusing primarily on jewelry and keychains. I had long been interested in working with recycled plastic, so I proposed that Polina and I create something together. Chests had never quite left my subconscious, so the object of our collaboration became a jewelry box - also a chest of some kind, holding treasures. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The design of the boxes became a logical continuation of my work on chests. A simple cubic shape is divided into two equal halves, and at the point where they split, a small cube emerges, serving as both a handle and a fastening mechanism. The exterior, made of recycled plastic, contrasts with the bright red interior. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; We developed three sizes of boxes: S, M, and L. The building, clad in Armenian tufa stone thus resembling the image of a waving Soviet flag, is one of the centerpieces of Kazan and a significant example of late Soviet architecture. After the collapse of the USSR, the National Cultural Center “Kazan” was located there, which also housed a Kazan City Museum until recently. Thus, the vestibule connects not only the different parts of the building, but also the various fragments of the urban fabric surrounding the building. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; To the west of the vestibule, on the ground floor, there are the public library’s multifunctional spaces, including reading spaces for toddlers, children and adolescents, a computer lab and a music room. This part of the National Library is the most remarkable, since it is as open and inclusive as possible for all user groups. Its interiors are resolved in a progressive, ascetic and democratic manner, using the natural texture of concrete, metal and glass, soft furnishings in soothing colors and accent lighting. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; To the east of the vestibule, on the second floor, there are reading spaces of an academic library. The architecture of the academic library spaces pays homage to late-modernist Soviet architecture. Spatially, with respect to the original museum floor layout, the library space inherits a stepped structure composed of three successive levels. These levels are effectively housing spaces for both individual and group studies, catalogue area, linear exhibition space and a remarkable sculpture - “Antiwar Demonstration” - an artifact from the original design. The ceiling of this part of the National Library is resolved by an ornamental pattern of tubular skylights and artificial lighting. The floors are epoxy terrazzo of warm beige binder filled with brown and gray marble stone aggregates, walls are plastered white, furniture and wall paneling are finished in natural oak. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In addition to major library spaces, the National Library building accommodates a conference hall, the Whitebox exhibition hall, the Blackbox hall, a recording studio, concept is based on a characteristic element of the Salina landscape seen in an old photograph – a salt hummock in the shape of a pyramid. It stood out against the general background, which consisted of the sky, strips of soil and grass, mountains, and water. It was the most striking and recurring element, reminiscent of the uniqueness of these places and the occupation of its inhabitants. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Therefore, as a new architectural object that draws attention to the ruin of the salt-pan house and helps prevent its further destruction, I decided to create a white pyramid raised above the ground, covering the ruin and remotely resembling one of the salt hummocks. The goal was to create a simple, neat, and heartwarming object that refers to the history of the place. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The pyramid is raised above the ground and rests on columns of CLT. The columns are placed at a small distance from the ruins, so as not to touch or lean on them. The roof itself consists of a structure made of CLT and white reclaimed agricultural mesh fabric. In the course of the research, I found a large number of unused sites both in the center of the city and on the outskirts. With a sufficient number of options for design, I concluded that the culmination of my research is the now lost Kitay-gorod wall, which ran along the perimeter of the Kitai-gorod district in close proximity to the Kremlin. The theme of the diploma project became the reflection on the memory and traces of the Kitay-gorod wall as the city-forming element of the center of Moscow. The wall surrounding it was built by an Italian architect known under the russified name Petrok Maly in 1535-1538. The wall had 14 towers on its perimeter, the thickness was around 3 m sometimes reaching 6 m and the height was 7-9 m. Built as a defensive structure, the wall was eventually integrated into the urban fabric over the course of history. In some sections, new buildings, including residential homes and shops, were directly attached to it. The wall has been restored many times, most recently in the 1930s under the leadership of N.Vinogradov, but in 1934 was demolished by the Soviet regime as part of Stalin’s grand reconstruction of Moscow. The foundation of the wall most likely has been preserved all along its perimeter under the ground. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; After the wall’s demolition, a certain void emerged in its place which is not immediately obvious to someone unaware of the wall’s former presence, yet it is subtly felt as a strange, transitional space in the very heart of the city. Additionally, during my analysis of the urban environment, I found that most of the buildings in this area are occupied by the government, expensive hotels, or commercial enterprises, while residential functions are almost nonexistent. This situation clearly illustrates the social and economic stratification within the structure of Moscow and explains the alienation and closed-off nature of its center. Therefore, I decided that in my project, I would symbolically recreate the Kitai-Gorod wall, while also enclosing within it everything that is missing or lost in this area: accessible housing and hotels and open cultural and commercial spaces. Therefore, to accommodate the new building, I needed to develop a new traffic scheme, taking into account the reduction in the number of lanes. In the new master plan, one side of the new building retains vehicular traffic, while the other side is dedicated to a pedestrian zone.In the places where the towers once stood (mostly at road intersections), I placed larger parts of the building with public functions, which became the “rooms” of the corridor. <img width="3351" height="3620" width_o="3351" height_o="3620" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/acdf866a2950ccbb48ecd6de5717082bdc76f375890e0c84529dae700465adbb/-2.jpg" data-mid="109261506" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/acdf866a2950ccbb48ecd6de5717082bdc76f375890e0c84529dae700465adbb/-2.jpg" /> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;The height of the new building does not exceed two stories, except for the areas where the tower-rooms appear. In this way, I do not fully block the facades of the adjacent buildings and preserve access to sunlight.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Since it was not possible to develop the entire perimeter of the wall within the scope of the diploma, I focused on several key fragments which are located in different surrounding context. As a result, I developed four fragments: at Lubyanskaya Square, near the Polytechnic Museum, on Varvarka Street, and near the future Zaryadye Park. Depending on various factors of the urban context, the facade of the new building changes on each individual segment, becoming more or less visually permeable. Along with this, the main content of the building changes as well. For example, in the fragment of Lubyanka Square, due to the proximity of the metro and several universities, I placed more residential spaces for students. Lubyanka Square becomes a hub for students and creatives, with coworking spaces and hostels. Varvarka Street offers tranquil garden-courtyards and apartments, blending residential and public life.
