I remember playing with compressed staples as a child . They were very pleasant and beautiful and could be used to make different shapes. About a year after my emigration I remembered the image of them. One phrase from the definition of staples in Wikipedia “used to hold tissue together” seems curiously metaphorical, it is this “used to” that, taken out of context, can be read in the past tense. In this sense, staples can be thought of as something that used to hold pieces of your life and now you need to fasten these pieces back together. Another interesting intersection is that in russia there is an expression “spiritual staples”.
